KICKING OFF THE RICHARD FAIRBANKS DOCUMENTARY

I’ve been working on: a documentary on influential American art potter Richard Fairbanks.
This will be a longer term project which I’ll shoot in bursts as exhibitions of Richard’s work and interview subjects become available.
Below is a shot of an interview with art critic Matthew Kangas, which I recently filmed at an exhibition at Seattle’s Nordic Heritage Museum.

Richard Fairbanks' restored photo of Kyllikki Salmenhaaras' stoneware vase, Helsinki 1960

Washington ceramist Richard Fairbanks' Fulbright year at the Arabia factory in Helsinki
resulted in a lifelong friendship with Finnish ceramicist Kyllikki Salmenhaara.
Their relationship-and Salmenhaara's own period of work
in the United States with Alfred University professor Val Cushing-
enriches our understanding of artistic dialogues between North America and Scandinavia.

Additional gallery space includes a retrospective selection from the Fairbanks Collection. These pieces illustrate influences and techniques Fairbanks gained from the important Arabia factory experience. History of this is detailed in Mathew Kangas' "Richard Fairbanks, American Potter" 1993 University of Washington Press biography.
